Before a Pochampally saree reaches the loom, it passes through a demanding pre-weaving process called asu. Yarn is wound around pegs in a precise pattern so that the famous tie-and-dye design can later emerge on the fabric.
For one saree, this could require thousands of repetitive hand movements. In many weaving families, this work was done by women. It was skilled work, but also exhausting work. The body paid the price long before the saree was finished.
Chintakindi Mallesham saw this pain at home.
His mother, Laxmi, was part of this world of quiet labour. The repeated movement of the arm and shoulder caused her great strain. For Mallesham, the problem was not abstract. It was not a design challenge in a classroom. It was his mother’s daily suffering.
He had no formal engineering degree. He came from a traditional weaver family in Sharjipet village, in the handloom belt associated with Pochampally weaving. What he did have was close observation, persistence, and a clear problem to solve.
He began experimenting with ways to mechanise the asu process.
The early attempts were difficult. The machine had to do more than move thread from one point to another. It had to follow the rhythm and accuracy of a skilled hand. The yarn could not snap. The pattern could not go wrong. The movement had to be repeatable, reliable, and affordable for weaver families.
After years of trial and error, Mallesham developed what became known as the Laxmi Asu Machine, named after his mother.
The idea was simple in spirit: let a machine take over the painful repetitive motion, while the weaver retained control of the craft.
That distinction matters.
The Laxmi Asu Machine did not replace the Pochampally saree. It did not erase the skill of the weaver. It removed one of the most punishing parts of the process. It gave time back to families. It reduced drudgery. It made a traditional craft easier to sustain.
The machine drew wider attention through the National Innovation Foundation and other institutions that support grassroots innovation. It went on to reach hundreds of weavers in Telangana’s weaving regions, including Nalgonda and Warangal.
Mallesham’s work was later recognised nationally. In 2017, he received the Padma Shri for his contribution in science and engineering.
His story is powerful because it changes how we think about invention.
Innovation is often imagined as something that comes from labs, large companies, or elite institutions. But many important ideas begin much closer to the ground. They begin when someone notices a daily difficulty that others have accepted as normal.
The Laxmi Asu Machine began with a son watching his mother work in pain.
That is what makes it a small idea with big impact. It did not begin with a market survey. It began with care. It did not try to make craft faster for the sake of speed alone. It tried to make work more humane.
The lesson is clear.
A good invention does not always need to be grand. Sometimes it needs to be close to the problem, respectful of the people who live with it, and patient enough to solve one hard thing well.

A small improvement in one painful step can change an entire livelihood.
The best innovations often come from people who understand the problem intimately.
Traditional crafts do not always need replacement. Sometimes they need tools that help them survive.
When technology reduces drudgery without disrespecting skill, it creates real human value.
